The Warrior

I’m ready to be a warrior.  I’ve heard the Braveheart speech.  I’ve read The Barbarian Way.  I can quote entire passages from Wild at Heart.  I’m ready to be a warrior.

Does anybody know what I’m supposed to be fighting for?

Sound familiar?

As men, we’re genetically predisposed to fight.  When my friend Dan and I can’t resolve an argument, I ask him if he wants to wrestle.  Someday I hope he takes me up on the offer.  It’s astounding how I’m ready to push aside the dinner table and thrash around on the floor with my best friend, but until recently my son struggled for my attention and my wife had to do the chores of two spouses.

But boy was I ready to fight.

In the military I learned about the Principles of War, one of which is called economy of force.  Simply put, economy of force means placing the assets at your command on the section of the battlefield where they’ll have the greatest affect.  In other words, pointing your soldiers in the direction of the fight.

Which brings us back to where we began.  Ready to be a warrior but don’t know where to start?  I’m going to give you two potential battlefields: your marriage and your family.  Still confused?  Find one chore that your wife hates to do and do it for her without saying a word.  Take one evening after supper, pull out the family calendar and pencil in a Saturday adventure with your boy or Sunday date with your girl.   Watch what happens next.

Remember friends: No small stories.  No quiet lives of desperation.  You were created to be a warrior, now start fighting for what matters.
